How to tell whether a skill has a market

2026-10-19 · InfoGap

The test that costs nothing

Write the sentence a buyer would type when they need your skill. Not the name of the skill — the sentence. If you cannot write it, the market has not been described, only assumed.

Then look for the workaround

Are people already solving this badly? A spreadsheet, a manual routine, a paid freelancer doing something adjacent. The workaround is the proof of demand; its awkwardness is the gap you can enter.

The failure mode of specialists

They search for their own vocabulary and find nothing, then conclude there is no demand. The demand exists in the language of the outcome, not in the language of the method.

What to do if the sentence has no variations

Either the market is not there, or the outcome has not been named in public yet. Both are worth knowing before you spend a year becoming better at something.
