A snapshot is not a series

2026-10-19 · InfoGap

What a snapshot can support

Comparisons within one moment: which area is busier than which, where the vocabulary is richest, where it is thin. That is genuinely useful and it is where most analysis stops.

What only a series can support

Direction, seasonality, and the difference between a stable level and a slow change. None of these can be inferred from a single moment, no matter how detailed it is.

Why people settle for snapshots

Because a series requires patience and a decision is needed now. The compromise is usually to act on a snapshot while calling it a trend, which is how confident wrong decisions are made.

The honest compromise

Act on the snapshot, but label it as one. State the decision horizon it can support — a week, not a year — and record the next reading so the series begins.
