Income that does not survive the month is not income

The two numbers people confuse

Revenue is what enters. Surviving income is what remains after the obligations that repeat: rent, debt service, subscriptions, the cost of keeping the thing that produced the revenue alive.

A person can have high revenue and no surviving income. It is the most common shape of a business that looks successful and cannot absorb a bad quarter.

Why the distinction is structural

Because obligations are fixed and revenue is not. A fixed obligation against a variable inflow is a lever pointing the wrong way — it amplifies bad months more than good ones.

The measurement

Take one month. Subtract every cost that will recur next month even if you do nothing. What remains is the number that matters. If it is negative, the activity is being funded by something other than itself.

The correction

Either raise the price of what repeats, or remove the cost that repeats, or convert one repeating cost into a variable one. There is no fourth option, and working harder only changes the inflow side of a lever that is already too long.
