What a flat line actually means

2026-10-19 · InfoGap

Three readings of the same line

How to separate them

Look at the neighbouring areas. If everything is flat on the same day, suspect the instrument. If one area is flat while its neighbours move, suspect the topic. If an area is flat for weeks while the world around it changes, suspect maturity.

Why we publish flat lines

Because a record that only shows movement is a highlight reel. The flat days are what make the moving days meaningful — they establish the baseline against which a change is a change.

The mistake to avoid

Treating flat as failure and changing strategy to manufacture a slope. Most often the correct response to a flat line is to keep measuring and to change the instrument, not the business.
